Capitol Reef National Park

In May we took a weekend trip down to Southern Utah to visit Capitol Reef National Park. We drove down on Thursday and stayed until Friday night (we were supposed to stay until Saturday but more on this later). We learned some valuable lessons on this trip but we still had lots of fun!!

We arrived Thursday night to our campground by Fish Lake. Just for your information, Fish Lake is at 9,000 ft in elevation. We were the only ones at the campground except for the camp hosts. We set up camp and then made dinner.

After dinner, it started to rain so we retired to the tent for a night. Liz planned for the rain and brought some games to play in the tent.

What we were not prepared for was how cold it got and the snow. Lesson for future trips: Check the elevation of the campground before planning a trip in May. The rain soon turned to snow and hail. We were fine in the tent even though it did get quite cold. However we didn't leave the tent until about 10 the next morning. In these pictures you can see all the snow on the tent outside. Good News: our tent stayed dry inside.

It was still really cold so we decided to just get in the car and drive to the National Park and make breakfast there. So we drove 40 miles to the park and the difference in temperature was drastic!

After eating breakfast, we hiked to Hickman Bridge. It was about a mile to the bridge. The boys loved to find all the rock towers marking the trail and climbing on all the rocks.

We took a little break when we got to the bridge and the boys had fun listening to the echos and climbing rocks.

When we were done, we headed back to camp. We had checked the weather for Fish Lake for Friday night and it said that it was supposed to snow again. So we decided to just pack up camp and head home. Jeff packed everything in the car while Liz made dinner. Then we ate and headed back home.
